When is it safe to format a camera card?
Only format a card after two things are true: the footage has been offloaded and verified with checksums, and a second backup exists. Then format in-camera — never on the computer, and never delete files one by one. Until checksums confirm the copy, the card is still your only original.

The one rule: never wipe a card on faith
Every lost-footage horror story is the same shape: the card looked full, the copy "finished," somebody hit format to free up space — and a corrupt or truncated file surfaced days later, after the card was wiped and reused. By then there's nothing to recover.
Formatting a card can't be undone in any way you can rely on. So the safe rule is simple: a card is original footage until proven otherwise. "Proven" means checksum-verified copies in two places, not a progress bar that reached 100%.
Safe to format only when ALL of these are true
- The card has been copied (not moved) to a destination drive.
- Every file is checksum-verified — bit-for-bit, not "it looks like it's all there."
- A second independent backup exists (a second drive or a cloud copy).
- You're about to format in-camera, on the body that shot the card.
Miss any one of these and you're gambling the shoot.
Why "the copy finished" is not the same as "the copy is safe"
A finished copy and a correct copy are different things. External drives occasionally drop bits, USB and card-reader connections glitch mid-transfer, and a Finder drag will cheerfully report success on a file that is silently truncated or corrupted. None of that shows up as an error. It shows up as an unplayable clip later.
The only way to actually know is a checksum: a fingerprint computed from the source file and re-computed on the destination. If the two fingerprints match, the file is identical, byte for byte. If they don't, you caught the problem while the card still holds the original, which is the whole point. This is what the ASC-MHL standard does, and it's why a drag-and-drop copy is not enough to clear a card for formatting. (More on the difference: checksum vs Finder copy.)
The safe sequence, step by step
- Offload — copy, don't move. Copy every file off the card to your external drive. Never use a "move" or "cut" that deletes the source as it goes; the card must stay intact until you're verified.
- Verify with checksums. Confirm every file copied bit-for-bit. With Copsy this is automatic — it verifies each file against an ASC-MHL checksum and only reports done when everything matches.

- Format in-camera. Only now. Put the card back in the camera that shot it and use its built-in format function. Don't erase it from the Mac, and don't delete clips one at a time.

Format in-camera — not on the computer
When the card finally is safe to wipe, format it in the camera, using the camera's own format menu. Not Disk Utility, and not a right-click "Erase" on the Mac. The camera writes the exact file system and folder structure it expects (this matters whether you're shooting a Nikon Z9/Z8 to CFexpress Type B, a Panasonic LUMIX to SD/CFexpress, a Fujifilm X/GFX body, or filling a GoPro microSD with chaptered clips). A computer format can leave the card in a layout the camera doesn't like, which is a common cause of card errors and corrupt files on the next job.
Also avoid deleting files individually to "make room." That fragments the card's file table and is a frequent source of missing or corrupt clips later. A single clean in-camera format is safer than picking files off — once the offload is verified and backed up.
