Offloading the card is only half the job. The footage still has to live somewhere for months or years — through the edit, the deliverables, the inevitable "can you re-grade that 2023 shoot?" email. That long-term home is your archive, and in 2026 there are three serious options: cloud, LTO tape, and cold hard drives. None of them is a clear winner; the right answer depends on how much you shoot and how often you need the files back.
One thing is true for all three: an archive is only as good as the copy you put into it. If the offload wasn't verified, you're faithfully preserving a file that might already be corrupt. The trap is cost at scale. Monthly per-TB pricing adds up fast for a growing library, and many providers charge egress fees — you pay to download your own footage back out. That math makes sense for a busy production company, a post house, or a long-running show with terabytes pouring in every week. For a solo shooter or a small team, the per-TB savings rarely outrun the entry price.
